If you want to rejuvenate lifeless skin and achieve a glowing complexion with little downtime, microneedling could be the perfect solution.
At Aventura Dermatology & Aesthetics – led by Dr. Bertha Baum, a member of the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery – we've used microneedling to help countless patients combat skin tone and texture issues.

What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a rejuvenating skin treatment that addresses:
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Hyperpigmentation
- Sun damage
- Mild inelasticity
- Acne scars
- Large pores
- Rough skin
- Dull skin
You may hear microneedling referred to as percutaneous collagen induction, because the treatment increases collagen in your skin. Collagen is the supportive scaffolding of youthful, smooth skin. It naturally declines with age. By inducing the creation of collagen (as well as elastin), microneedling leads to smoother, plumper, firmer skin.
What Does Microneedling Do?
As we age, our collagen and elastin fibers become thinner and looser. These essential structural proteins contribute to firm, smooth skin. Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that creates microscopic openings on your skin's surface, promoting collagen and elastin production for a more youthful appearance.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?
Microneedling is an excellent treatment for all skin types. Unlike laser treatments, which carry the risk of hyperpigmentation for some skin tones, microneedling is safe if you have a dark or olive complexion.Â
You could benefit from microneedling if you have any of the following skin concerns:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Hyperpigmentation
- Mild skin laxity
- Rough texture
- Dull complexion
- Acne scars
- Large pores
Additionally, microneedling can be performed on other areas of the body to reduce the appearance of stretch marks or raised scars.
What Happens During a Microneedling Treatment?
During your microneedling treatment, one of our experienced providers will use an automated handheld pen-shaped device containing a circular arrangement of tiny needles. Your provider will pass the rotating device across your skin to make minuscule openings in the epidermis without damaging other tissue. This triggers your body’s healing response, prompting it to produce more collagen and elastin.
As an added perk, any serums, creams, or ointments we apply after the treatment are more effective since the skin is opened up by the tiny channels made during microneedling.Â
How Often Should I Do Microneedling?
The number of microneedling treatments you need depends on your unique skin concerns and desired results. One to two treatments could be enough if you’re younger and only have minor pigmentation issues, acne scars, or fine lines.Â
However, many of our patients prefer to do an initial series of three to six microneedling treatments spaced about four to six weeks apart. Once the results build from their initial appointments, they find they often find they can maintain their refreshed appearance with two to three treatments a year. Our providers can give you a better idea of the results you can expect during your consultation.
How Long Is Microneedling Recovery?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment with very little recovery time. However, you might want to schedule your appointment before the weekend since redness is expected for 24 to 72 hours. You might also experience mild peeling, dryness, bumps, or swelling for the first two days.Â
We suggest you don’t wear makeup during this time since microneedling opens your pores, and heavy products can clog them. Instead, we’re happy to recommend some gentle cleansers and moisturizers to support the healing process. While you might look a little red or feel sensitive after microneedling, you can typically return to work the same day if your job isn’t physically demanding.
The Microneedling Process
Modern treatments use an automated pen-like device. It’s handheld. The head of the device contains a circular arrangement of tiny needles. The device is set to penetrate the skin at a certain depth, making the treatment highly customizable.
As the provider passes the head of rotating needles across the skin, the needles make tiny openings in the epidermis. These minuscule punctures prompt a healing response in the skin without damaging tissue.
Another benefit of microneedling is that the skin is essentially opened up via the tiny channels made, and can thereby better absorb any variety of rejuvenating topical ointments, creams and other skin products chosen by you and the provider.
Can Microneedling Help Reduce the Appearance of Large Pores?
Yes, microneedling can reduce the appearance of large pores.Â
The process works by creating micro-injuries in the skin, which stimulate collagen production. As collagen levels increase, the skin becomes smoother, tightening the pores.
Over time, this treatment leads to a noticeable reduction in pore size. It gives the skin a more refined and even texture.
Is Microneedling Safe for Sensitive Skin?
Microneedling is generally safe for sensitive skin when performed by a qualified professional. However, it's essential to inform your provider about your skin type and any sensitivities you may have.Â
A professional – like those at Aventura Dermatology & Aesthetics – will adjust the needle depth and intensity to reduce irritation and ensure a safe experience. Those with very reactive skin might experience some redness. This usually subsides within a few days, though.
How Soon Will I See Results From Microneedling?
Results from microneedling are not immediate.Â
You may start to notice improvements in your skin's texture and tone after 1-2 weeks. However, full results, including reduced pore size and smoother skin, often appear after a series of treatments over several months.Â
Remember that collagen production takes time. The best results are usually seen after completing 3-6 sessions spaced several weeks apart.
Does Microneedling Have Any Long-Term Side Effects?
Microneedling is considered a low-risk procedure when performed correctly.Â
Long-term side effects are rare. However, they can include hyperpigmentation or scarring. This is particularly likely if the skin is over-treated or proper aftercare isn't followed.Â
Ensuring a licensed professional performs the treatment and adhering to post-treatment care instructions can reduce the risk of long-term complications.
Can Microneedling Help With Active Acne?
Microneedling is not generally recommended for individuals with active acne. The process involves creating tiny punctures in the skin. This can potentially spread bacteria and worsen breakouts.Â
That said, microneedling can treat acne scars once the acne itself is under control. Your dermatologist may suggest acne treatments to address active breakouts first. Then, you can consider microneedling for scar reduction.
Can Microneedling Be Combined With Other Treatments?
Yes, you can combine microneedling with other treatments, such as:
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
- Chemical peels
- Hyaluronic acid serums
These combinations boost skin rejuvenation. They can also target specific concerns like fine lines, texture, or pigmentation.
Is Microneedling Suitable for All Skin Tones?
Yes, microneedling is safe and suitable for all skin tones. Unlike some treatments, it does not carry the risk of hyperpigmentation for darker skin tones. This makes it a great option for diverse skin types.
