WHERE ART MEETS SCIENCE

It’s normal to be nervous before getting fillers for the first time. While dermal fillers have been around for centuries, the unknown of what to expect and how to prepare for your first session can be intimidating. Thankfully, advancements in cosmetic dermatology science mean you have very little to worry about during your first session and future follow ups.

Here at Aventura Dermatology, we want you to be comfortable and confident in your decision to get dermal fillers — whether it’s to help redefine your features, add volume, or combat the signs of aging. As experts in cosmetic injectables and aesthetic medicine, here are our tips for preparing for your first session and what you should know about aftercare.

One Week Before

If you use over-the-counter medications that could cause blood thinning, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or any other NSAID, avoid using them for a week before your treatment. This can help reduce the risk of bruising. However, if you are on a medically prescribed blood thinning medication, please be sure to consult with your prescribing physician before changing the dosage or stopping the medication.

Talk to us about any supplements you take, as well. Some products, such as primrose oil or St. John’s Wort, should be avoided in the week leading up to filler treatments.

Two Days Before

In the couple of days before your treatment, it’s important to avoid anything that can irritate your skin. Skip your nightly Retin-A (tretinoin), retinoids, glycolic acid, and any other anti-aging skin products. Avoid tweezing, bleaching, waxing, or using cream depilatories on the area where you’ll be treated.

24 Hours Before

Avoid alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before your treatment. Consuming alcohol both before and after an injectable treatment without allowing for a sufficient time gap can increase the likelihood of experiencing significant bruising and excessive bleeding.

On the Day of Treatment

Skip your morning multi-step routine to arrive at our office with a clean face. Just wash your face and arrive without creams or make-up.

While the injections are minimally invasive, sometimes people feel a sting. We can use a local numbing medication to avoid discomfort.

After Fillers: The First Hour

Apply an ice pack to deal with any swelling. The ice pack should be wrapped to avoid over-exposing your skin to cold. Use it 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off for the best results.

Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for any pain after the procedure. Follow the dosing instructions on the OTC medication.

Avoid scratching, picking at, or massaging the site. This can help reduce irritation and ensure your skin looks its best right away.

Many people find that using a topical arnica solution helps them recover more quickly after their treatment. While this is not required, it can help relieve swelling and bruising for some individuals.
